Sir Walter Raleigh's country or city of origin was Hayes Barton a village in East Budleig close to Budleigh Salterton. He was born in 1552 and died in 1618. People call him Sir Walter Ralegh or Sir Walter Raleigh because his father. his father, and a halfbrother used different forms. The spelling "Raleigh" was adopted by Sir Walter's widow, and has been commonly used, though there has been a tendency to prefer "Ralegh" in recent times. The most significant thing that Sir Walter Raleigh has done is popularising tobacco in England. Sir Walter Raleigh was an english aristocrat, writer, poet, soldier, courtier, spy, and explorer. Sir Walter Raleigh rose quickly in favour of Queen Elizabeth. Sir Walter Raleigh was said to have the most colorful personality in the Renaissance. Sir Walter Raleigh arranged the construction for one of the ships involved in the war Armada. The ship was called "The Ark Royal." He donated the ship in exchange for $5,000. In 1578, Raleigh sailed to America with explorer Sir Humphrey Gilbert, his half brother. This expedition may have stimulated his plan to found a colony there. In 1585, he sponsored the first English colony in America on Roanoke Island. He came to Queen Elizabeth's attention when he went Ireland to stop an uprising in Munster, a town in Ireland. He soon became a favorite of the queen, and was knighted and was elected captain of the Queen's Guard in 1587. He became a member of parliament in 1584 which is a legislature of Great Britain. In 1592 the Queen found out about his secret marriage to Elizabeth Throckmorton, her made of honor. Queen Elizabeth became so jellos that Raleigh and his wife were imprisoned to the Tower. After his release he went on an unsuccessful journey to El Dorado to find some gold. Elizabeth's successor hated Raleigh, and he was accused of plotting against the king and sentenced to death. This was reduced prison for life and Raleigh spent the next 12 years in the Tower of London. In 1616, Raleigh was released to lead a second expedition to search for El Dorado. The expedition was a failure, and Raleigh also defied the king's instructions by attacking the Spanish. On his return to England, the death sentence was reinstated and Raleigh's execution took place on 29 October 1618.
